Weather, Halloween lights and Christmas wishlists make autumn a perfect time to play video games. Whether you love open worlds brain teasers or laughing with friends online the upcoming season has plenty of games to keep you busy.
Looking at what’s announced and what’s coming soon a few big trends stand out: adventures games you can play on the go old favorites returning and games that bring people together. Sweepstakes Casino Games Here is a look at the titles and events shaping the season based on information as October 28 2026. Release dates may still change.
## Big Adventures Lead the Holiday Conversation
One of the anticipated games this year is **Grand Theft Auto VI**. Rockstar has set the release for **November 19 2026** on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. That puts it in the middle of the holiday shopping rush. The game returns to Vice City, which makes it a major event for fans of story-driven games. These kinds of games have a place in the holiday season. A big title can become a project you play over nights. You can wander through neighborhoods follow characters and share surprises with friends. That kind of experience goes beyond just finishing a game—it becomes part of the season.
For gift buyers excitement alone should not be the reason to buy. Think about the person’s genres what platform they use and the game’s age rating before making a choice. A blockbuster can be fun. Only if it fits the player.
## Competitive Gaming Keeps Friends Connected
Fall brings reasons for online groups to get together again. **Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4** listed for October 23 by Xbox is one of the season’s action launches. [Source: Xbox Wire](https://news.xbox.com/en-us/2026/10/16/week-on-xbox-new-games-for-october-19-to-23/)
Competitive games have a holiday advantage: friends can play online even when they can’t meet in person. A familiar squad, shared goals and a few unpredictable matches can turn an evening into a fun get-together.
Before buying a multiplayer game for someone find out what their friends actually play. Compatibility with players, subscription needs and preferred game types can matter more than the flashy cover art. The right game is often the one that lets a player join in with their group.
## Nintendo Switch 2 Expands the Portable Picture
Nintendo’s October lineup shows how portable gaming is growing. Their schedule includes **KINGDOM HEARTS Collection [I–III]** *Resident Evil** titles and an upgraded **Minecraft** version for Nintendo Switch 2. This variety matters during a season. Different people might want a story, a creative building project or a tense survival game—all without being stuck in front of a TV.
Portability also changes how gaming fits into holiday plans. A quick handheld session can fill an afternoon or keep someone entertained while others watch a Christmas movie. When shopping check the console name on the box. Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2 are not the same. Don’t mix them up.
## Spooky Games Suit Autumn Evenings
Halloween is the time for darker moodier games. Nintendo’s October schedule includes **Resident Evil 2 Deluxe Edition** **Resident Evil 3** and **Resident Evil 4 Gold Edition** for Switch 2. *Castlevania: Belmont’s Curse** for Nintendo Switch. These games offer ways to enjoy a scary mood. Some players like suspense, limited supplies and creepy settings. Others want worlds with fast action and combat.
Choosing by atmosphere is more helpful than assuming all spooky games feel the same. A game full of monsters may not suit someone who prefers tension. Watching a video of gameplay can help tell the difference between an exciting evening and one where you're hiding behind your controller.
## Party Games Bring the Gathering Together
For Christmas gatherings easy-to-play games matter more than ones. **The Jackbox Party Pack 12** listed for October 15 by Xbox has five mini-games. Lets people use phones as controllers. One person needs to own the game. [Source: Xbox Wire](https://news.xbox.com/en-us/2026/10/09/week-on-xbox-new-games-for-october-12-to-16/)
This setup is great when a room has both gamers and people who rarely use a console. Getting everyone involved quickly means time for jokes, friendly competition and surprising answers.
Before the party check how many players each game supports what content is involved and if it needs internet. A short test run ahead of time can stop the host from fixing problems all night. The best party game is the one everyone understands and enjoys.
## Familiar Characters Add Christmas Cheer
Holiday games also have room for characters everyone knows. Xbox’s October list includes **Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer – Holiday Play Edition** which offers exploration and co-op play based on the animated film. The same list has updated **Toy Story** games. [Source: Xbox Wire](https://news.xbox.com/en-us/2026/10/09/week-on-xbox-new-games-for-october-12-to-16/)
These games can bridge generations. Adults may remember characters from childhood while kids meet them in a way through interactive play.
A familiar name is a start, but not a promise. Look at reading level, controls and how co-op works. Make sure the game matches what your family expects.
## Subscriptions Encourage Discovery
Not all fun this season comes from buying games. Sony’s November PlayStation Plus Monthly Games include **Dead Island 2** **Tomb Raider IV–VI Remastered** and **Monster Train 2** starting November 3. This mix shows what subscriptions can offer: team action, classic exploration and strategic card games. Trying something outside your style might lead to a new favorite.
Check what the membership includes and when you can claim the games. Remember subscriptions are not the same as buying a game
## Christmas Shopping Rewards a Little Planning
PC gamers have a date to mark: **Steam’s Winter Sale starts December 17 2026 and runs through January 4 2027**. Discount sizes will vary by game. [Source: Steamworks](https://partner.steamgames.com/doc/marketing/discounts/seasonalsales/)
Make a list before shopping. Discounts can be tempting. Don’t let them distract from what you actually want. For gifts check the person’s platform what they already own and what games they like.
Leave time in your holiday plans to play. A game picked with care becomes more special when someone shares the experience helps with controls or cheers, for that hard-earned win.
